International Theatre Night Bucharest

On 7 November 2025, the final International Theatre Night of the phōnē project took place at Teatrul Evreiesc de Stat (TES) in Bucharest. Coinciding with the last project meeting, the evening brought together artists, playwrights, and partners for a vibrant multilingual celebration of theatre and community.

The programme featured excerpts from two productions developed within the phōnē framework: Hercy by DSVTh in Bautzen and Calígula by Stadttheater Bruneck. These were accompanied by live scene readings from the plays Bastard, Fanfare, An Fear Liath, and Os Actos e as Profecías – offering audiences a unique insight into the multilingual writing processes at the heart of the project. The evening also included a traditional Kven song of the performance Sallaikaa lasten tulla minun tykö.

Originally, the TES ensemble was scheduled to perform The King of Klezmers by Daniel Galay, who was present for the event. Due to illness, the full production had to be cancelled – but was beautifully replaced by Maia Morgenstern with a moving performance of Im Theater ist was los (“Something’s happening in the theatre”), echoing the spirit and resilience of the ensemble.

Another highlight of the evening was the premiere of the documentary film about the community theatre project in Southtyrol, presented in the presence of the Romanian–Yiddish community cast members.

The programme concluded with a guided walk through Bucharest’s historic Jewish quarter, led by TES Director Andre Munteanu, offering participants valuable cultural and historical insights into the city’s Jewish heritage.

The Bucharest event was a rich and meaningful conclusion to the International Theatre Nights series – a celebration of shared voices, multilingual creativity, and transnational exchange.
