Thomas Cloarec

Artistic Director

Thomas was trained at the European Superior School of Arts of Brittany . After working for four years with the Breton company Ar Vro Bagan, he created and directed the PantEatR Company until 2004 in Brest, for which he directed La Verrière and the bilingual show for young audience La ballade de Wishbone Jack. At the same time, he trained as an actor and performing artist in various courses with Yoshi Oïda, Maria Jimena Cavalletti, le Petit Théâtre de Pain, Charlie Windelshmidt, François-Eric Valentin, and has performed under the direction of Julie Berès, Goulc’han Kervella, Lionel Jaffrès, Charlie Windelshmidt, Giselle Sparza.

 

Thomas lived in Vietnam and Laos from 2005 to 2008 and has worked as an artistic advisor with the National Circus of Vietnam, in collaboration with the Compagnie Matapeste, and also collaborated with the artists of the Vientiane National Circus as well as the Kabong-Lao puppet company and the Khao Niew Theatre Group with whom he has continued to collaborate since then.

 

Thomas Cloarec has been the artistic director of Teatr Piba since the company’s creation in 2009. He has directed the contemporary showsEden Bouyabès (Teatr Piba-2010), Al liorzhour (adapted from The Gardener by Mike Kenny, Teatr Piba-2012), Metamorfoz (Teatr Piba-2014), Rumeurs (Khao Niew/Teatr Piba-2014), collaborated in the conception and direction of L’Or avec le faire (Les Cambrioleurs/Julie Berès-2013) and provided artistic direction and sound design for radio dramas, such as Ar Maezioù (adapted from Martin Crimp’s La Campagne, Teatr Piba – 2015), Lampedusa Way, Lampedusa Beach and Lampedusa snow (adapted from Lina Prosa / Teatr Piba 2016-2017) or Quand viendra la vague, (adapted from Alice Zeniter / Teatr Piba 2021). In 2016 he co-directed Merc’h An Eog, in co-production with the National Theatre pf Wales in the Welsh language – Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru in Wales. The immersive and mulilingual shows Spluj (2018) and Donvor (2020), both of which are the result of a long-term artistic and scientific collaboration with IFREMER, are currently on tour throughout France. Thomas is currently developping a new theatrical creation project MILKY WAYS- THE COW & THE PANGOLIN, which is trying to follow a journey through the archaeology and history of human consumption of animal milk. 

 

Thomas Cloarec also collaborates regularly with various artists such as David Wahl, Julie BérèsCie Les cambrioleurs, Charlie Windelschmidt Cie Derezo, Marie Guérin, Krismenn, regularly making forays into theatrical writing, radio creation or documentary production.
