Arwel Gruffydd

Director

The former Artistic Director of the Welsh language national theatre of Wales.

Originally from Blaenau Ffestiniog, North Wales, and a graduate of Bangor University (BA Hons, Welsh). Further studies include post graduate diploma in performance from the Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art, London. Professional experience includes 20 years as an actor in theatre, television film and radio, and Literary Manager at new writing theatre company Sgript Cymru, Cardiff.  Then ten years as a director of films and then theatre, including Associate Director at Sherman Cymru, Cardiff (2008-2011). Artistic Director and Chief Executive of Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru (the Welsh-language national theatre of Wales) from 2011 – 2022.

Awards include : BAFTA Cymru 2002 (Best Actor), and DM Davies Award 2002 at the International Film Festival of Wales, Cardiff (Best Short Film).  

Since her work for Lân fan taal (“land of languages”) – the project on multilingualism during Leeuwarden-Fryslân European Capital of Culture 2018 – multilingualism has become more and more part of her work.
She has been head of marketing & PR ad interim for Tryater since April 2021. She also does the marketing for Leeuwarden UNESCO City of Literature.
